Something not working, a bottle we don't know, or a recipe you think is wrong? Write to hello@drinkstrolley.uk and you'll get a reply from a person, usually within a few days.

Emailing about a problem? It helps enormously to include the name of the drink or bottle involved, what you tapped, what you expected and what happened instead. A screenshot answers most layout questions on its own. Your iPhone model and iOS version are useful for anything that looks broken rather than wrong.

Scanning bottles

The camera didn't recognise my bottle

Label recognition works best with the front label square-on, filling most of the frame, in even light. Glare across the label and steeply angled shots are the usual culprits. Dark bottles with embossed rather than printed names are genuinely hard — try the back label, which often has the name in plain type.

If it still won't read, add the bottle by hand: My Cabinet → Add bottles, then search by brand. The list is grouped by category and every entry can be found by typing.

It matched the wrong bottle

Choose the right one from the alternatives offered on the results screen. If the correct bottle isn't among them, dismiss the match and add it by hand instead.

My bottle isn't in the list at all

Use Can't find your bottle? Add it yourself at the bottom of the Add bottles screen. Give it a name and tell the app what kind of thing it is — a London dry gin, a reposado tequila — and it will be matched into recipes exactly like a catalogue bottle.

Then please email the brand and product name. The catalogue grows from what people tell us is missing, and bottles added this way turn up for everyone in a later update.

Recipes and drinks

I think a recipe is wrong

Tell us — this is the single most useful email we get. Name the drink and say what you think should change, and where you'd expect to see it done that way. Every recipe has been checked against the standard references, but cocktails are not a settled science and house versions differ legitimately.

Why does a drink suggest a bottle I own but shouldn't use?

Some bottles are less interchangeable than their category suggests. A cask-aged white spirit carries the character of the cask and behaves more like a whisky than a vodka; a flavoured vodka is not a substitute for a plain one. Where the app knows this it says so on the recipe. If it has stayed quiet when it shouldn't, let us know which bottle and which drink.

What is the Substitute list?

Drinks you can make with one sensible swap from what you own — blanc vermouth where a recipe asks for dry, say. Each one explains the swap and what it will taste like. Drinks whose character depends on a specific spirit are never offered with that spirit swapped.

Why can't I buy anything in the app?

Apple does not permit physical goods to be sold inside an app, and we have no shop. The links on an ingredient page open the retailer's own site in Safari, where you buy from them directly.

Your cabinet and your data

How do I change what's in my kitchen cupboard?

My Cabinet → Kitchen cupboard → Edit. Citrus, sugar, eggs and the rest change week to week, and the "one ingredient away" list is only as good as what's ticked there.

Will I lose my cabinet if I get a new phone?

Your cabinet lives on the phone, inside the app. It is included in an iPhone backup, so restoring a new phone from a backup brings it across. Deleting the app deletes everything it holds, and there is no copy anywhere else for us to restore.

How do I start again from scratch?

Delete the app and reinstall it. That clears the cabinet, the kitchen cupboard, favourites and the record of what you've made.

What do you know about me?

Nothing. There is no account and the app sends us no data at all. The privacy policy sets out exactly what is stored and where.

Anything else

Requests, drinks you think are missing, and blunt opinions about the design are all welcome at hello@drinkstrolley.uk.
